Starting Fire!

In this amazing video, Kevin TIncher shows a small group of students how to start the sacred fire. Half way through this there is a special appearance from Tata Pedro Cruz. Very cool! This close up shot shows the correct size hole to start with on your fire board.

Kevin Tincher and Yes-I were among the many people and presenters that made it to Blue Star here in Connecticut on October 12 for the filming of the first of a four part series called Conscious Conversations and Mindful Music.

This documentary is attempting to collect many different world wisdom's and indigenous beliefs as they relate to the sacred four directions. Here is a picture of Grand Master Aiping Cheng teaching at Blue Star This project was created as a result of ideas formed at Gathering of the Peacemakers and is intended to bring cohesiveness to our culture. We see this vision reaching worldwide levels quickly and will prove to us through the reconnection to nature that many of us have naturally grown separated from our true source. We believe this to be a natural phenomenon one that was necessary to show us the correct path by straying from the true path. There are many different modalities and schools of thought that address this topic. It is not our job to judge rather we intend to bridge the commonalities of there practices to show how many cultures are speaking the same language. here are two elders we work with on a regular basis. Sequoyah Trueblood and Marlyn Cane.

Through attention to a wide range of indigenous and ancient belief structures we hope to reunify as many people as we can through self-awareness to what has always been present and available to us but most times easily overlooked.

Through this community and ones like it, we hope to raise the level of our awareness with the guidance of our elders and their indigenous wisdoms. It is our intention to show that our lives are not about conquering nature, but rather seeing our inseparableness from it.

If we can make the necessary corrections to our perception and help each other, our neighbors, families, allies and especially our adversaries, to wake to the next level of collective consciousness, then there is hope for the humanity’s’ continued symbiotic existence on our planet.

There are three more gathering scheduled the next one is on The winter solstice then the spring equinox followed by the summer solstice. We have a group of people gathering for their own similar conversation in Southern California for the winter solstice and hope to have a few more groups to carry on this movement. Coming together like we all did at Gathering of the Peace makers will make a difference if we all do just a little bit to help usher it through. Remember it is not about going with the flow rather it is becoming the flow that sets us free. Much love and respect and hope all of you are doing well.

Great Spirit

Today was a day that just clicked for our quartet. It has been a long stretch since we have all been together in the studio here at Blue Star and we came together this day as if we have been rehearsing weekly. Rich coming off a solid week or two of his retirement from Etna
and Pro drummer having a few weeks to nurse his sore back helped the smoothness of this session.
John O’reilly was anxious to strap on his bass and had many weeks away from our sound to contemplate the sounds of the free flowingness that these grooves calls for. Sarah put on a killer food spread for our break and we all enjoyed a medley of pasta, salads and tasty morsels of goodness, thanks Sarah!
Slow even fell asleep on the floor in front of my didgeridoo and you know it’s good if he does that, a true litmus test for the studio he is.

I have been fighting an illness as well for many weeks. I’ve seen doctors to natural paths and some speculate Lyme disease, others a strong virus. X-rays, MRI tanks and a super cleansing diet with lots of good food and rest were ordered. Either way, no conclusiveness to what it is and up to this session I was experiencing dizziness and tingling in my left arm and leg. But after this session and spending the time mixing it on the board I have seem to come out of my sickness and have felt better than I have in months! Music is medicine it would seem. I also must admit my good friends Sequoyah Trueblood and the women he walks beside Marlyn Cane came a few days earlier and spend some healing time here with Sarah me and Slow and their energy was all over this place when the boys showed up to record on Friday, so a big thank you to them as well for their energy, love and kindness.
When it all came together the music was smooth, tight and very enjoyable. We have our first charitable show this weekend at the Hole in the Wall Camp that Paul Newman put together a few years ago and this will be our second appearance with these great people, thanks to Paul Newman for his consciousness. http://www.holeinthewallgang.org/

Pro Drummers Birthday!
April 12,2008

Today’s sound experiment happened with only a few hours notice. There was no session planned until I spoke to pro drummer that morning and filled him in on John Ellis coming down to do some work on the board with pro tools.
Turns out that John brought his guitar just in case we played a bit and play we did! Pro drummer comes over with his new bass guitar and his friend Matt who just so happens to play a mean bass. Matt from what I understood was into country bass lines a bit, as well as a bunch of other styles but this is how the afternoon went. Oh and did I mention Matt knows space jams? Well he does. Sarah and I just coming off the Levon Helms midnight ramble last weekend in Woodstock were already in the country barn jam mode and it sure came out in this mix. Sarah came home and her and Slow dog added their energy to the great afternoon too!

But keep in mind it was Pro Drummers birthday and he was a bit fired up and ready to hit the skins like we were in front of a crowd of 10 thousand. Even with the aching back he brought his a game. John’s lead support on his ax combined with the didge, flutes and harmonica with some country lyrics and the day proved to be a very listenable extravaganza.

I went into the session a bit under the weather with the flu and some seriously aching muscles, but what we came out with was a good dose of medicine. The days jam consisted of Rob Daulphena space bass,
Rich McGhee horns and flutes, Eric Simonsen jamming lead guitar, Bruce Nelson a.k.a pro drummer, Sarah Smith vocals , Pete Onofrio didgeridoo, flutes and vocals and John Ellis on the sound board.

Eric came down again from Albany for his second sound X and was ready to let it loose and he did. The guitar sounds rivaled an upstate NY outside summer concert that had a touch of Government Mule and a dash of Dave Mathews in the cake mix.
But adding the didge and flutes with some Coltrain-esque horns and some Trent Resner bass effects thanks to Pappa Scorpio and the afternoon took on a seriously cool vibe. It was good to shake out the cold and the last of winter with some fun sounds, thanks you guys. This video clip is kind of funny, Pappa Scorpio was tuning my bass guitar which is a left hander. So notice the think is upside down, still sounded great! The camera floats over to John who drove down from West Hartford and was still pulling his chops together for the jam and we catch him in a yawn. Great time either way!

February is in the rear view and here comes spring! This was an epic gathering for many reasons. First of all we were blessed with the very talented and very beautiful Margaux Hayes, vocalist and percussionist from Harford. This was a welcome back to Margauxs home base here at blue star with some new people and a fresh gathering to greet her. This was her first sound X session and she brought all the vocals and more from the MaGeePa project with some new twists as well. She also made her killer guacamole for the table and we all know this is really why pro drummer comes to the gigs.

Colin Benn brought his infamous viola groove educed trance with his classically trained ear add his trade mark wa-wa peddle to stir it up a bit and step back Knitting Factory!
The structure that Colin brings to session is a crucial bonding element that I feel helps “gel” the room and musicians.

Together with Rich McGhee’s decades of experience, powerful bass tenor infusion and groovy sounds capes, the group took off in a MaGeePa direction but with a completely different rhythm feel. This in part thanks to John O’Reilly and Bruce a.k.a “Pro Drummer’s” impeccable and smooth beat foundations. O’Reilly even mixed it up a bit this time to keep the rest of us on our toes listening for the key changes. Adding the Didgeridoo created even more of that good vibration, helping to fill up and lift the room to higher and at the same time deeper, levels of musical focus.

As the sun was setting we all gathered for one last jam before a light snack and a cold Guiness. Attempting to make this piece about six minutes, alas it followed the same path all the songs from this session did, which was over twenty minutes long! A real String Cheese barnburner, wow! We even had Sarah Smith, my partner and soon to be wife; join us for some vocal highs that really added an angelic feel to a few of the pieces. Thanks Sarah I never knew!

I had a lot of fun with this group today and enjoyed the magic as it rolled from our voices and instruments Slow Dog isa true test if the music is good, if it is, he will quickly fall asleep at our feet as we play, today was a good indication!

Feb 23 2008 Back to the Music!

I know you are asking, "what happened to sound X 7?" It's out there just not logged yet so hang in there for those of you who are following this site and watching it grow.

Well well, this session rocked like no other time. The February doldrums were quickly and thoroughly chased away this evening with the coming together of old friends and one bad ass drummer. My old friend Eric Simonsen was in town with his family for the weekend and he had a spare few hours to join myself and pro drummer (Bruce Nelson) for some serious work on our rhythm section.

Eric’s style of guitar playing to me sounds a bit like Joe Walsh from the confessor and some of Eddie Van Halen mixed in. This proved to be what pro drummer liked to jam with and this I did not know.

Pro drummer, comes to find out has played in many different hard rock and punk rock bands over the years. When Eric brought his trippy, wailing guitar and effects, with the didge’s heavy bass foundations, pure energy on an indigenous level transpired right in front of our mics, wow!

I can hear this session scoring an intense Indiginous drama, like Brave Heart or Last of the Mohegans on some level, truly fun and powerful sounds thank you pro drummer and easy E!

Fern Burn 2008
Ferns, Fire, Food, Friends, Music and Apple pie

Today we collected the Dead Sea grass that had been growing and scattered throughout the grounds. The dead stalks of grass make for a nice winter landscape and their tallness helps to provide shelter from what few neighbors we have. But once a year it is time to cut down the grasses and get ready for the new spring growth, that will soon brightening up our now brown country side.

This gives us an opportunity to release the suns energy that has been built up in those grasses over the past year. Only when we burn the grasses or anything organic, that the energy is released 10,000 times as fast as it took to grow them. This created an amazing, extremely active fire and is our reason for the 2008 Fern Bern ceremony!
This year we built an enormous hay pile next to our fire circle in the center of the back of blue star. Many people were coming to the gathering bringing food and drink, but only a few would make it for the sunset lighting. John Ellis, myself, Sarah, Slow dog, Kathy, John, Matt and Doug all made it in time. Pete Duke our Australian friend was there for a short time, until the wi- fi lost it’s connection to the internet.

I believe it was Kathy that said, “The hay pile looks like a huge bean bag chair!” With that we all quickly piled on to the organic hay chair for the last few minutes of the sunset. It felt like all the tension was being pulled out of me through the sea grass, being pulled back into the earth completely relaxing me. Matt silenced my chattering and we soon, all seven of us fell silent in complete and total awe of the fiery star quickly dropping on our planets horizon.

Two minutes left to the sunset and our dear friends Bettie and Jim show up with their two young sons. The hill stood there for a brief moment completely caught in the moment. As Ellis emerged from the northern pines the sun set. We all rose up and I lit the fire. There proverbial/ceremonial ribbon had been cut. At that point some of us stayed by the fire while the rest rolled into the house to ready some food and drink. Ending the night we ate apple pie till we were full and played music until we were sleepy.

The Fern Burn was a success we all said goodbye. Until next Feb, when the Fern Burn returns, thank you to all who could make it. Here comes spring!

Sound X Mex Feb 16 2008

Blue Star Sound X Mexico; These two musicians, although no didgeridoo present, were a perfect romantic addition to the end of a great day on the Island of women. To the locals this place is called Isla Mujeres. I highly recommend this tiny island on the tip of the Yucatan peninsula for a recharging and relaxing quick getaway from the day in and day out grind.
Here in this video clip Sarah journals our day sipping a Sol as we prepare for our tomorrows journey across the Yucatan.
Here Sarah stands in front Chichen Itza wearing her mochela, which means school bag, the most famous and best restored of the Yucatans Penninsula's Maya sites . The Mayan local told me much about the 2012 profecies, it was his beliefe that come 2012 nothing would happen. It just signifies the beginning of a new period, or time. Like resetting our watch or calander to yet another era. Our all time favorite ruin to visit was Ek Balam. Vegitation still covers most of this ruins but excavations and restorations continue to reveal stunning finds. We had this place almost all to ourselves this day with just a light drizzle. It seemed to keep out the would be tourists and it was truly amazing to see. After a very intense journey it was time to head back to Na Balam for the last four days to recover and get ready to head back to the north east. It was good to get home to Slow, who guarded Blue Star while we were gone. I am definitely intrigued. And I really liked the Teepee too.
I appreciate that there was thought given to the interrelatedness of things (that food was included is a statement of it's importance/ mysticism/appreciation of art of and importance of surrounding yourself with good friends... )

I really liked how we came together today. The rhythm section was very tight and playing with John and Bruce took a turn for the better.
I felt more comfortable with these guys today and without any lead player it created a relaxed feel from which the musicians could take their time and find their own groove.

Bruce brought some new attachments for the drum kit, which added a nice medley of audible diversity to the grounding yet ethereal sound of the session.
Charley Kulinski stopped by again to play some killer didgeridoo, which freed me up to play a bit of Native American flute.

One of the great part about this combination of people is not just their musical talent and improvisational ears, but their ability to work with the less structured musicians like myself and really take the time to listen as well as talk out their thoughts. This makes it so enjoyable for all. I really enjoyed the session and look forward to our next gathering. Thank you Bruce, John and Charley

Sound X 5 Feb 8th

Today’s sound X was an unexpected one. I received a call from an old acquaintance named Fieke. He is a drummer that played internationally for 10 years, sang and traveled since his 11th birthday. He studied percussion in London and also in Enschede Holland. Fieke has played professionally and toured with the UK and US bands like Daniel Bedingfield and others. He’s now a freelance musician and a music therapist. I received a call from Feike a few days ago and he told me of a student of his whom is an exceptional bass player named Evan and wanted to come over to Blue Star to “plug in” and see what we have. I thought it would be a good idea and the next sound X transpired effortlessly and with much fresh enthusiasm. I found the beats to be easy to play didgeridoo and flutes to and Evans bass lines reminded me a bit of a young Trent Rezner or The original Shriek Back bassist Dave Allen. It was the tail end of a two-day January thaw here at Blue Star, and the weather was in the upper 50’s. The day before brought temps into the 60’s and yet another nor’easter is on its way tonight. The sun came out to greet our smiling faces as John O’Reilly, Bruce Nelson, Rich McGhee a surprise visit from Charley Kulinski (fellow didge player) and myself came together for sound x 4.

The session had a nice jell feel to it, getting to know these guys a bit better and the studio mics reflected that. The at times snappy pace and carnival type sounds that flew from the instruments lead the musicians comfortably around some familiar and some new sound scapes.
Original, free flowing and rhythmic best describes the feel of today’s session. At one point as the sun was setting and blazing through the studio windows, a Wizard of Oz vibe came into the room and some trippy lyrics about the Witch of the west emerged, nice! Thank you Rich, John, Pro Drummer Charley and Slow, see you guys in February!

Libations to Brooklyn

Rich McGhee rolled into Blue Star around 11 am with a few of his most travel friendly instruments. We jumped in the car and headed to the New Haven train station to pick up our fellow musician and good friend Colin Benn. Colin was coming in from Boston on his way to his studio apartment in Brooklyn. A Julliard graduate and world renown professional musician, Colin always brings an air of professionalism in a light hearted way that is a welcome focused addition to any sound experiment or music venture. If I were going into a musical battle of ethereal and eclectic proportions, I would want these men on my side. The sounds that are created when McGhee, Benn and myself are in the room are nothing short of organically fantastic and deep! I’ve played with McGhee for over two years now with The MageePa project and I’ve know and played with Colin for close to ten in a group called Waka Tangga, and I would have to say these guys are probably the top two people I love to sound explore with. They’re professional, focused and all around fun guys.

Me, McGhee and Colin had what seemed to be a short ride into New York, over several different bridges and helpfully guided by our GPS dashboard directional unit fondly named Spencer. The NYC skyline first popped into view I knew we were headed into an adventure.
I literally could feel the electric charge of so many other great current and past artists and musicians’ energy surging through my veins I thought I would catch fire! There truly is no other place like NYC on this planet. If you have an idea this is the place to bring it and plant it in the soil. If it’s going to fly it will fly from here.

Our mission had such focus and I could sense things were going to change forever! It had the feeling of being electrically charged and my eyes couldn’t open wide enough to take it all in! The skyline and collection of steel and bridge cables peppered my vision. The tall buildings and chizzled under growth of concrete and steel created a contrast on the sky line of the setting sun that rivaled any wall calendar you might see on a waiting room wall or some random Chinese restaurant. This was Rich McGhee's old stomping grounds and he was calm but I felt he was hopeful of things to come. New York city is truly an amazing place in time and history. This trip is one of several we will embark on as we scout out the territory for the up and coming video that will be shot in the spring called The Brooklyn Sessions.

Once into Brooklyn we headed straight to Colin’s to drop off some things and prepare to head over to Rough Magic studios.
Here is the site of our next recording where we will have Dan Nocerra, a good friend of ours from Middlesex College help us shoot the video The Brooklyn Blue Star Session.
This video is a continuation of a series of musical production that Dan and his wife Jeannie (Sam Dog Films) and (Blue Star Productions) have created over the past three years. So needless to say I was very excited and wide eyed to the possibilities of this extremely rich and creative canvas that Brooklyn offers.

Rough Magic studios is a small eclectically charged space on the 4th floor of an inconspicuous building in the upper section of Brooklyn. There was a group of teens in the sound room reviewing their latest track on the pro tools board. At first I thought they were in their mid to upper twenties as they all sat attentively on the floor listening to the sound engineer editing skills of their work. Then as I listened to the music I really started to appreciate how good these kids were. They had a Beatles/Oasis flair and yet a strangely unique feeling at the same time. Needless to say I was impressed with their sound and the engineers mix was superb from what I was hearing. I have worked with pro tools for the last three years and I know what good sounds like, these guys had it.

After a brief tour of the studio McGhee, Colin and I headed over to Will Swofford's studio.
Will is an old friend of mine from Madison, CT. He graduated from Wesleyan a few years ago and like a lot of Wesleyan students I assume headed to NYC to test his creative wings. A smart fellow, his music and drone sound exploration is nothing short of amazing! Will has a way of pulling the musicians and audience into a space and holding you there longer than you think is possible. Once you surrender to his drone frequencies the true door or portal seems to open. Today was no different. Fortunately I brought a small camera to capture a piece of the action and will soon have a sample clip to see. The instrumentation today was saxophone, bamboo flute, viola, didgeridoo, vocals and synthesized guitar and zither.

The microphones were hot and the board ready by 3pm. What was about to transpire was any ones guess? We had Bruce Nelson return from sound X 1 to continue to surprise me and Rich with his metronome like rhythms he’s a percussion genius to say the least. But today a new energy had entered the studio. His name is John O’Reilly and we had no idea what the luck of the Irish was about to bring us!

John, a bass player and sound experimentalist himself He is a 39-yr-old and plays a 5-string electric bassist (low B) & audiophile. He played professionally in his early 20s. Currently, he’s been participating in the New Haven Improviser's Collective. Also, he plays in an original, progressive, fusion trio. John started playing bass drum in The Shriner's marching band where his son is learning bagpipes. His favorite music Texts are "Twentieth Century Harmony" & "The Secret Power of Music". He’s Fascinated by synthetic scales, using those scales to build unconventional Chords, the physical & chemical properties & possibilities of sound.

In the last 3 yrs., he’s been playing, listening & experimenting with drones. And now he’s found the Blue Star Sound experiment files and we are happy to have him with us! Just take a listen to what happened! The quartet proved to be a group of musicians that really knew how to listen to each other. A rock like bass line and pure rhythmic and up tempo drum beat set the space for the low over and undertones of the didgeridoo. Add a little of Rich McGhee on top and this group kicked it! Lot’s of fun and we look forward to playing and experimenting with these guys again real soon.

The first sound exploration December 15, 2007

The group came together this day with a sense of professionalism I have not seen in a while. The combination of sounds created an almost immediate ethereal and surreal atmosphere. With the drone of the Didgeridoo , Rays electric bass groove train and Carl’s stand up bass fluctuation, the foundation was set.

The “in the pocket” nature of Bruce’s percussion, combined with a complex multitude of Anne and Emily’s vocal variance, created the audible space for the intricate and almost artistically mathematical placement of sound accents by Rich McGhee.

Put together, these sounds lifted the room and most likely this part of town, to higher levels of consciousness. When the collective intellect was auspiciously quieted and the creative combination of sounds came forth from our instruments, true shape shifting transpired. Listen for yourself to the complexities and yet almost indigenously simplistic yet profound connection to our reality that seems to be happening here. The key that made this session what it was, was the level of respect each musician had for one another and deep listening skills that each participant seemed to have. There were no stars here only a focused group effort at a sonic happening.
